Physical Theatre Performance Project 2024
What is behind?
How often have you felt that your words fail to fully capture the essence of your thoughts? Expressing emotions verbally is often frustrating; there’s always a gap, a loss in translation between our inner experience and our outward expression. On top of that, in our everyday interactions, gestures and words often have a double, if not opposite, meaning. This project aims to delve into the swampy but very fruitful terrain of misunderstanding, questioning the limits of verbal communication and oscillating between the explicit and the implicit.
„What is behind?“ This provocative question forms the core of our upcoming physical theatre project. EX/IM-PLICIT aims to look beyond the surface, exploring the hidden areas of our daily communication. Over two months, we will develop choreographies and embodied images together that make the invisible (or unsaid) visible.
Art does not reproduce the visible. Art makes visible.
Paul Klee
It is said that a gesture, a look, a movement or a picture can say more than a thousand words. What’s more, our bodies also store and conceal information, often expressing what words can’t or don’t want to.
On the one hand, self-censorship and the constraints of societal norms are shaping our language; the use of irony, as an implicit form of communication, is a surviving strategy to avoid harmful communication. On the other hand, the increasing Instagramification of our lives raises pertinent questions about authenticity: Do our visual representations truly reflect our reality, or merely project an idealised version of ourselves?
With this physical theatre project, we invite you to join us in unraveling the complex layers of human communication through movement and gesture. Together, we will explore the power of the unspoken and the hidden aspects that lie behind our everyday interactions.
Our project draws inspiration from various sources: Tanztheater (as the perfect mixture of gesture and movement), Surrealism (André Breton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto exactly 100 years ago, arguing in favour of breaking down the rule of logic), Butoh (and its strong metaphorical embodied images), advertising (and its sophisticated persuasive techniques and use of subliminal messaging), etc…
