Physical Theatre Workshop 2024

18 – 21 July 2024

Exploring _ Body, Space & Aesthetics

When we want to perform, it is not only about learning new skills, but also about unlearning things we may not need anymore and to open up our bodies to a new range of experiences. In theatre, it is not only about expression, it is about the sensitivity to be there, to listen, and to connect and the ability to project outwards the inner states.

This workshop focuses on building up “performative” conditions through play, bodily communication and movement, using an handful of techniques in which we train perception, expression and connection (to ourselves, the partner, the group, the space, etc). We will practise exercises inspired by the diversity of physical theatre, contemporary dance and performance art practices and methods. We will work both technically as well as sinking into free improvisation, or focussing on body-to-body & collective-body communication.

In some deepening sessions we will work with voice and movement and get to know physical approaches to embody emotions.

At the end of each day we will create compositions. Therefore we propose specific use of space, the work with scores of action or poetic images. Improvisations and group tasks will lead into creative processes which help us reflect on the aesthetic of nowadays stages and question the relation between art, daily life and embodied thinking.

The workshop includes:

  • Building up stamina as well as strength and flexibility for the body
  • Perception, coordination & presence
  • Bodily listening and communication with a partner/others
  • Coordination & composition in space
  • Working on permeability (e.g. for emotions), Physical Emotions
  • Using body anatomy & somatics for deeper exploration
  • Performative games to stimulate creativity

Techniques: Dance and Movement Improvisation, BodyWeather, Yoga, Release Technique, Floorwork, Ballett, Physical Theatre, Biomechanics, Viewpoints, Contact Improvisation, Strategies of Performance Art, etc.

Open Level: This workshop is suitable for beginners, for dilettantes and movers looking for pepper for their salad, as well as for professionals looking for a non-academic approach.
