September + October 2023 | Berlin
A performance project on the topic of
Degrowth / Postwachstum / Decrecimiento / Décroissance
If you have lived on this planet in the last 5 years you have probably heard of DEGROWTH or, failing that, the much more spectacular variant of Collapse. There is not much room for doubt even if the truth may be uncomfortable: the future is far from bright and splendid if we are faced with cyclical crises, climate emergency, scarcity, resource depletion, extinction, and a general loss of resources.
To our capitalistic imaginary based on limitless growth and progression the idea of Degrowth may sound scary. But…
• Is the end of material abundance as we know it (with all its drawbacks like: wild consumerism, eternal wastefulness, exploitation as the main form of productivity, industrialisation of nature, hard individualism and related mental illnesses, etc.) the beginning of the worst dystopia?
• Or is it perhaps an opportunity to rethink, reorganise or even recover ancient/extinct ways of life and social relations that we lost along the way?
Maximal minimalism | Minimal maximalism
For the moment and from our particular situation, we can try to understand this new and complex scenario a little better, not by adding more data to the information jungle but by doing it through the body: our senses, affects, movements, perceptions, intuitions, aesthetics, etc. To embody a controversial and critical concept like DEGROWTH can be a challenge, but it can also hold some surprises. A broadly stated working proposal: Could it be that we are facing a game-changing paradox if less material dependence can mean more space for human interactions? It could be seen as:
Scarcity vs excess
Austerity vs exuberance
Deficit vs opulence
Is it possible to translate the multiple edges of such a complex subject into a performative, physical and theatrical project?
We hope to answer this question together in the framework of the workshop and through a physical and artistic practice. By means of dance/movement, physical theatre, live arts, media, installation, site-specific and performance, we will try to translate our ideas, fears, perceptions, intuitions and proposals into an open-format presentation that we can share with an audience.
The result is not determined in advance. We don’t know what it will look like or what it will resemble although physical theatre (as broad as it can be) will remain the main language. This performance project will be an open and collective process, so we can expect some creative chaos, strange associations, kaleidoscopic looks, as well as strong and soft stakes coexisting in the theatrical outcome.
• This performance project is open and suitable for anyone interested – with or without previous experience
• It requires regular participation throughout the period and a willingness to work intensively on a physical level
• Only with previous registration
